Environment Arabia is an established and respected environmental and sustainability consultancy based in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

We have an established track record of undertaking environmental assessment projects in the Arabian Gulf and MENA region that meet the requirements of national and local government, investors and international partners. These includes working to IFC, World Bank and Equator Principles on a regular basis.

Our team of international consultants have worked on the most significant projects in Bahrain and bring a wealth of experience across a broad range of specialisms including; terrestrial & marine impact assessments, sustainability, contaminated sites, field ecology, social impacts & stakeholder engagement, environmental monitoring and GIS.

Michael (Mike) has 21 years experience in conducting EIA (many to International Finance Corporation – IFC standard) and marine ecological surveys not only in Bahrain but within the Arabian Gulf. He directs a fully equipped marine ecological survey team (operating to HSE (UK) requirements) which has extensive knowledge of local ecosystems and environmental issues. Mike has been based with EACS since its inception in 2001 so brings an unequaled level of local marine experience and understanding to every project.

Halel is the Managing Director of EACS. As a local Bahraini environmental expert with 22 years of experience Halel brings invaluable leadership to all projects. Her experience through this time has covered a broad range of environmental services, although her specialisms are in EIA, environmental auditing, waste management and Environmental Management Systems (EMS). She also has excellent contacts with the SCE and other government authorities in Bahrain and has actively worked within the national legislative framework for twenty years. Halel will have overall responsibility for the project and quality assurance.

Lloyd is a chartered environmental engineer with over 19 years of experience within the environmental and consultancy sector. Lloyd specialises in project management, contaminated sites, environmental & sustainability management systems and compliance. He has worked on a broad range of projects across many different regions, including seven years in the Middle East working on projects in Iraq, KSA, Qatar and UAE. Lloyd has often worked on mega projects in difficult locations (including numerous in KSA), which has enabled him to become very adept at problem solving to ensure project success.

Sarah has 16 years of experience having joined the EACS team in early 2006. Sarah specialises in the fields of Zoology, Marine Biology and Marine Resources Management. She has experience of working on environmental surveys conducting both sub-tidal and inter-tidal work, including marine invertebrate and algal taxonomy. Sarah has a strong background knowledge in the areas of marine biology and ecology, coastal & estuarine science & management, marine oil pollution and environmental toxicology. In addition, Sarah is a qualified and experienced HSE ‘SCUBA’ diver, this commercial diving qualification is issued by the UK government’s Health and Safety Executive and is in accordance with the Diving at Work Regulations 1997.

Rafaela (Raf) is a senior environmental consultant and chartered environmental scientist with over 12 years experience in environmental management. Rafaela has strong expertise in managing environmental impact assessments, conducting environmental and social compliance audits to local as well as international World Bank Standards, developing and managing all aspects of ISO 14001 and environmental and sustainability strategies for businesses. Rafaela also has experience in conducting environmental and sustainability reporting and environmental training.

Matthew (Matt) has 10 years of experience within the environmental sector, working in the Middle East, Australia, Fiji, Philippines and the U.K. He has five years of experience as a consultant developing environmental studies for marine related projects. He has conducted over 200 marine baseline surveys. Mathew has gained extensive experience in the field of coastal development predominantly with regards dredging and reclamation.

Kate Elsworth is a specialist in Environmental Impact Assessor with over 17 years’ experience in environmental consultancy in the UK and overseas (mainly Bahrain). She joined Environment Arabia in February 2007 and worked as an Environmental Manager in Bahrain for a District Cooling Company (Tabreed Bahrain) for 18 months before that. Her experience includes project management of Environmental Impact Assessments, production of Environmental Statements, environmental reviews and appraisals, and noise monitoring. Kate has project managed: an EHIA for the Khuff Gas Development Programme for Tatweer; an EIA for the A/B Pipeline for Bapco; Bahrain Bay Topside Development Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP); the Salam Resort Bahrain Topside EIA and EMP and Bahrain Financial Harbour (BFH) Tabreed District Cooling Plant (DCP) EIA. In 2019 Kate took up a non-full time associate position with EACS.

Antonella Paci

Antonella Paci is a senior environmental, health and safety specialist with over 16 years experience. She worked as an Environmental, Quality and Safety Manager for a multinational Paper Group for six years where she led the company to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18001 certification. She was also responsible for all environmental and occupational health and safety issues associated with the Group's operations. In Bahrain she was responsible for implementing an environmental management systems (EMS) for a waste management company until achievement of ISO 14001 certification. Since joining EACS, she has been conducting environmental audits of different projects (Bapco, BMP, Alba, SULB, ASRY, Banagas) and she has been responsible for producing environmental management plans (EMPs) and environmental impact assessment (EIA) for industrial projects.

Rhys Fitzgerald

Rhys is a recent Masters graduate from the U.K. in Environmental Management and Conservation and has now spent three years in the Middle East. Rhys’s background is primarily in fieldwork research and scientific data collection, which he has carried out in the Amazon Rainforest in Peru for his masters thesis, in addition to Borneo, Botswana, Iceland and across the U.K for his Bachelors degree. He is a PADI Open Water Diver with 54 logged dives (including scientific diving). Since joining Environment Arabia, Rhys has conducted site auditing and TSS sampling for the Bapco Ma’ameer Channel Pipeline Crossing, Bahrain Steel Sea-bed Clean-up, SULB Wharf Monitoring, Investment Gateway Bahrain 2 (IGB2), and the NMC Phase 2 & Busaiteen Link Package 2 projects.

Eman is an Environmental and Social Consultant with over 12 years’ experience in consultancy. Eman has developed skills in consultation with Government bodies and the general public, baseline survey work, preparation of environmental and social documentation, development of SEPs, environmental and social auditing and SIAs. Eman is fluent in both English and Arabic and has translated several reports and Non-Technical Summaries. Eman has led the stakeholder engagement effort for the Bapco Modernization Program (BMP), Alba Line 6 Expansion Project and Alba Port Capacity Upgrade Project, in line with international standards and guidance, considered to be the first projects in Bahrain where the public was actively engaged. In addition, Eman leads the government and NGO consultation for all other projects for which an EIA is undertaken.

Mikko is a graduate of Geology with 3 years experience within the environment industry. He is a specialist in GIS and has an extensive knowledge in various Remote Sensing and GIS software and techniques. Mikko has been involved in various projects such as quadrangle geologic mapping, coastal mapping, geohazard mapping, and as well as groundwater resource assessment and monitoring, in the Philippines. He is also involved in groundwater monitoring events (GME) for Bapco and BMP and mapping tasks for other projects in Bahrain.

Jacques is a multi-disciplined draughtsman / technical designer, with over 18 years’ experience in the Architectural, Construction and Manufacturing Industry. His experience in the Architectural field is utilized for our GIS, mapping and drawing requirements. Jacques’ extensive experience in the Construction Industry is also advantageous, for environmental auditing as he is well accustomed with HSE requirements in the industry. Jacques also assists the team with monitoring and sampling for our terrestrial and offshore projects. Jacques is also utilized as a Designer for our sister company, Reef Arabia. His role is Reef Arabia is to design, develop and manufacture new fiberglass molds, to be able to cast new artificial reef units.

Anthony Janson

Production Manager (Reef Arabia) and Marine Team Support - Class C Commercial Diver

Anthony (Ant) has 20 years of experience working in the Commercial diving industry from undersea mining in South Africa to undersea construction in Bahrain building harbours and laying pipelines. He has been based in Bahrain since 2004 and since 2013 he has been Production Manager for Reef Arabia, Ant has contributed to the manufacturing, supply and deployment of many of our artificial reef units in Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Anthony also supports the marine team with various monitoring activities.

Jaafar Juma

Marine Team Assistant and Boat Captain - RYA level 2 - Bahrain Boat license

Jaffar (Jaff) has 22 years of experience total and 13 years with EACS. Jaff is responsible for management of the marine team’s boats and equipment and driving boats during marine surveys. He is also a qualified diver. Previous to this Jaff was involved in the fishing industry in Bahrain and has an expert knowledge of local Bahraini waters.
