Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs was originally constituted in 1984 as the Ministry for the Environment. It operates a permitting regime to authorise and regulate activities that may result in damage to the environment. The principal environmental legislation in Oman is Sultani Decree Number 114/2001, the Law on Conservation of the Environment and Prevention of Pollution which requires owners of potentially polluting activities to minimize their environmental impacts in accordance with “state of the art techniques”.
