A Royal Decree dated 25th February 1981, entrusted the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment with the control of pollution and protection of the environment within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. On 15th October 2001, the ‘General Environmental Law and its Rules for Implementation’ was enacted which aims at protecting public health from all activities and acts damaging the environment, conserving and developing natural resources, establishing environmental concerns as an integral part of national development planning in all fields and promoting environmental awareness among all segments of the society; see link below:

In addition to the laws established under the PME, the industrial cities of Jubail and Yanbu are controlled by the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu (RCJY). A dedicated set of environmental pollution control standards are applicable in these cities; see link below:
